FUMC Wednesday Food PantryIn late 1992, several First Church members started a program offering sack lunches for people, in need, to take with them. On Wednesday afternoons these lunches were prepared by volunteers and distributed from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Over the last 11 years, the number of people served has grown. With the advent of the Shalom Community Center and its decision to serve a hot lunch, the volunteers affiliated with the sack lunch program decided to change its focus to one of offering groceries for people to take with them. To reflect this change, the name of the ministry was changed to FUMC Wednesday Food Pantry. Distribution is from 3:30-5:30 p.m. each Wednesday.
The Pantry is a guided grocery store providing people a selection of a canned vegetable; canned, frozen, or occasionally fresh fruit; protein; a sweet; sometimes chips; and sometimes cereal, bread, and extras delivered by the Hoosier Hills Food Bank Wednesday afternoons just before opening. All food comes from the Food Bank at a cost of 14 cents per pound or from donations. Bread from the food bank is free, but availability is not guaranteed.
The Pantry serves families with young children, newly unemployed, the working poor, the disabled, the elderly on low fixed incomes, newly arrived immigrants, and the homeless. An average of more than 100 people are helped each week.
For more information, contact the church office at 332-6396.
